Calvary Chapel Port St. Lucie

Worship Band

The music/worship ministry exists to bring glory to God through the use of both individuals' God-given gifts and the multimedia tools that are available to us. We choose songs and media that are modern, God-centered, powerful and relevant to our culture. We want to foster an environment of openness and transparency with the Lord. We are excited to see the team grow as God draws those who are truly gifted and have a heart of service. We desire to see worship teams develop in the Children's, Youth, Young Adult's, Men's, Women's and other ministries, and see the Lord raise up committed worship leaders within them. Through worship, prayer, and service to the Lord and each other we become more effective and passionate disciples of Jesus Christ.

Be a part of the Worship Team

The first step is to fill out a Worship Team Application and a Ministry Partner Application (available on Sundays at the welcome table). Once completed, these forms should be turned in to Kelli. After review, you will be contacted to schedule an audition.

Vocalists and musicians will be asked to prepare for an audition to help us evaluate the level of your abilities.

If the audition goes well, we'll schedule an interview to go over your Ministry Partner application.

Upon the successful completion of these steps, we will invite you to begin practicing with the team!

FAQs

Why is a modern style of music used during worship?
Music styles continue to evolve, grow, and develop as the culture around us continues to change. Music style in worship has changed significantly since the days in the Old Testament when the people of God played their songs on harps and lyres. Even in our more recent church history the addition of the organ, and even hymns, created controversy in the church as it was something “new” at the time! As times and styles change, our desire is to be a church whose musical expression of worship is relevant and relatable to the culture around us. However, by choosing a more modern style of music, we are not negating the validity of older or more traditional styles. While the music itself may continue to evolve, the message in the songs and the purpose for our worship never change! Music is simply a vehicle we use to worship the Creator of the Universe with one unified voice! We choose songs that are dynamic, powerful and God-centered in order to bring God the Father the praise and adoration He deserves. We never choose songs with the goal of leaving anyone behind, but simply desire to use the tools we have in this modern age to glorify God and draw the lost to their heavenly Father. Music has incredible power to reach people. We want our worship to be passionate, dynamic, relevant, modern, and excellent.

Why do people raise their hands or clap during praise and worship?
Worship is a time when we respond to God! When we reflect on the wonder of Who He is, what He has done, and how He continues to work in us, our response should be characterized by passion, excitement and awe. The Bible provides numerous examples of people in a corporate worship setting using music, singing, clapping, shouting, raising hands and even dancing (as David did) to passionately bring praise to their Creator. We want to encourage everyone in the church, to not just routinely sing songs, but to respond passionately to God. As we enter into a time of worship, the congregation will sometimes be asked to clap their hands or lift their hands in response to God.

Clapping is an outward expression of the passion and the excitement we feel in praising God, and the lifting of hands represents a complete surrender and dependence on God.

Psalm 63:4 says
“I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands.”

The lifting of hands is also mentioned in Psalm 134:2
“Lift up your hands in the sanctuary and praise the LORD.”

Psalm 47:1 says:
Clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy!

What sort of ability level is required to be a member of the Worship Team?
Vocalists need to have excellent pitch, demonstrate vocal independence, and be able to sing parts -- i.e. alto, tenor, etc. -- or be willing and able to quickly learn one of these parts. Vocalists need to be comfortable enough “on stage” to smile, lift hands in worship, clap while singing and be a physical model of worship participation. The goal is to have as much of the music memorized as possible, in order to alleviate the necessity for song sheets.

Musicians need to be proficient at playing their instruments. Guitarists play with chord sheets. All our music uses chord structure (e.g. “G”, “G/B”, “Em” etc.) so it isn't necessary to be able to read sheet music, just chords and notes. Musicians also need to have a good memory because the less dependent they are on the music, the more freely they will be able to worship while playing the notes as accurately as possible.

It truly is a myth that everyone with a heart for worship should be on the Worship Team - our goal, of course, is that every single person in our church would truly have a heart for worship! We believe it is unfair to an individual as well as the ministry itself to place that individual in a ministry where they are not gifted. Simply having a love for singing and/or a love for playing an instrument are not qualifications for leading in worship.

It says in Psalm 33:3 – “Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy.”

And again in 1 Chronicles 15:22 it emphasizes this point – “Kenaniah the head Levite was in charge of the singing; that was his responsibility because he was skillful at it.”

Of course, musical ability is just the first aspect of the bigger picture. We are looking for gifted people who have a genuine desire to serve God, the congregation and other members of the team. The CCPSL Worship Team exists to serve the congregation by leading them into God’s presence with grace, passion and confidence – giving God the praise and worship He deserves.

For a complete outline of the desired qualifications and responsibilities, please see the Worship Team ministry description which is attached to the Worship Team application

How can I be involved with the Worship Ministry if I am not a vocalist or musician?
We're always looking for Audio/Visual and Creative Team members to help with the technical and media aspects of the worship. Please check out the
Creative Ministry page to get more information on how you can be involved. We also need individuals to help with the set-up and tear-down aspect of the weekly preparation for services! If you are interested in helping with setting up and tearing down, please contact  Kelli.

I love a song you did, where can I get it?
Just ask Kelli or fire off an
email to her. Our songs come from different sources but we pull most of our song choices from various Passion, Vineyard and Hillsong United worship albums.
